Zagora is Pelion’s biggest mountainous place with rich cultural heritage and spectacular view of the Aegean Sea, as it is located in the green eastern slopes of Pelion. One thing that makes it special is the traditional color of the village.
Set in a charming position in-between thousands of years old forests regarded as the center of the woodland area in Pelion and is popular for its natural beauties.
Walk two main kalderimi (cobbled stone path) routes linking Zagora and Horefto (Chorefto), to discover the old nature.
One starts from Agios Georgios square and another from The Transfiguration of Christ church, so we can use both to make a circular walk. We can also walk one way and return by bus (see timetables at www.ktelvolou.gr) or taxi. It is advisable to wear long trousers and hiking shoes, because vegetation may be overgrown at certain spots, mostly in the southern route, despite efforts to keep the routes clean.
History and Culture
Archaeological findings testify the presence of a pre-Christian town there. The new Zagora developed by the end of the 16th century, due to the silk trade exported to Venice, Dalmatia, Germany and other parts of Europe. Wool imported from different areas of Greece was mixed with local qualities, spun and woven in the famous ‘workshops’. Specifically the “Zagorian Shepherd’s Coats” became famous all over the Greece. Due to the trade of all these products, Zagora developed a fleet of ships, which used the nearby anchorage of ‘Horefto’.
During the Turkish occupation were two underground schools in Zagora. One in the cells of the Christ the Saviour monastery (1160 AD). Children were taught here basic skills of reading and writing. The other called “Ellinomouseio- Greek Museum” (1702 AD) housed in the monastery of Saint John the Baptist. This school became famous for its dedicated teachers and distinguished students who were trained, not only in the Greek language, but also in mathematics, physics, astronomy, geography, philosophy, history and foreign languages. Among the students of this school were great personalities as the Patriarch of Konstantinopel Kallinikos Lapatis, Rigas Pheraios (the leader of the Greek revolution against the Turks), Anthimos Gazis, and Filippos Ioannou.
Zagora is still economically active with the cultivation of the legendary “Apple of Zagora” made by the Agricultural Association Zagorin, one of the first cooperatives in Greece (founded 1916). The Women’s Cooperative, prepares local sweets, marmalades and liqueurs with great artistry and fantasy and organize the “Festival of apples”.
Get a new slant on the old world with a visit to this school called the “The “Greekmuseum” (School of Rigas Feraios, 1777 AD), the beautiful churches of Agia Paraskevi (1803 AD), Agios Georgios (St.George) (1765 AD), Agia Kyriaki (1740 AD) and Agios Nikolaos. All of them are decorated with huge icons and have very striking golden sculptured icons.
In the historical Library of Zagora, founded in 1762 AD, are kept thousands of rare books, manuscripts, Byzantine texts and 150 handwritten codes.
