One of the oldest villages Mouresi is built amphitheatrically in the south of the river bed of Kissos spread on a green wooded side of the mountain. You can adore here the panoramic views to the mountains, the neighbouring villages of Kissos, Agios Dimitrios, Agios Ioannis and the deep blue of the Aegean Sea.
Mouresi features wild natural beauty and traditional colours and is ideal for quiet and relaxing holidays away from the big crowds. The beach of the village is located in Damouchari, which lies in a bay below. This is also the only natural harbour in the northeast of the Pelion peninsula.
The village overlooks a deep valley whose great beauty is known only to the few lovers of nature, the initiates, who have sought out a guide to take them down the deep recesses of the ravine to two cascading streams which form natural pools and in whose ice-cold waters only nereids and nymphs have bathed since the dawn of time. The hiker will then resurface into civilization, a changed person with a twinkle in his eye.
Beginning at Mouresi you can walk the paths that lead to Tsagarada and Damouchari through the marvellous dense forest.
History and Culture
It remains unknown when and by whom the village Mouresi has been built. However, it must have existed a settlement in ancient times, since the ancient grave that was discovered in 1934 near to the church of Agia Paraskevi supports this probability.
Mouresi was built on the coast of the small port of Damouchari. Since 1600 AD and onwards the residents begun to move to the area of the current village. Damouchari used to be the only place at the eastern coast of Pelion, where a ship could safely dock in case of bad weather. The ruins of Byzantine fortifications at the bottom of the bay, as well as the customs and storage buildings still standing, are a testimony to its importance.
The village’s flag-stoned, main square is dominated by a tall linden tree that generously lends its shade to the beautiful oldest church of Holy Trinity where you may admire its “slotted iconostasis”.
A few hundred meters down the main road there is the old church of the Dormition of Virgin Mary built in 1792, which is a prime example of a basilica, quite artfully built and decorated with an old, carved wooden iconostasis of exquisite craftsmanship.
At the bottom of the Damouchari bay you see the remains of a medieval Byzantine castle. Damouchari (d’amour), reminds settings out of a movie. After all here were several scenes shot of the the big screen version of the global smash hit musical “Mamma Mia” filmed in Damouhari, in September of 2007.
The wild natural beauty is “a micro-paradise”. Experience the grandeur of the remote ravine with the two cascading streams which form natural pools in whose ice-cold waters nereids and nymphs have bathed since the dawn of time. Connect with the textures and forms of the natural old world around you which appeal directly to the deepest aspects of human consciousness and makes you relax and enjoy every second of your stay.
