This is a suburb of Volos with a nice view, where the old mansions mixed with new ones retain the traditional architectural style. Among orchards stand tall houses with mushroom-shaped roofs. A sort of barnyard under the big rock of Makrynitsa is the Archondiko Kondou. On the top floor of this house there are sixty square meters set aside for the frescoes of the eccentric farmer painter Theophilos Chatzimichailis.

Nature

You walk to Agia Triada church in Ano Volos. There you start a circle walk of 9 km, duration: 4 hours with stops. In your walk you see the old, nearly untouched, nature of Pelion and you visit or watch some very interesting sights. You walk on the old cobblestone paths used by people but also mules to transport goods.

You pass Anakasia, featuring a bronze statue of the naive folk painter Theofilos who lived and worked there about a century ago (a visit to the Theofilos` museum that is nearby is recommended-open Mo-Fri 08.00-15.00, tel. 2421047340). You see old mansion-guesthouses, the stream of Mana, a short deviation from your course that is recommended, a 15-minute climb following the course of the overgrown ravine to the homonymous spring of Mana, In your course you pass over 9 small wooden bridges. Pelion`s nature is at its best here.

Coming back to the asphalt, you continue walking towards Makrinitsa and pass by the drinking water fountain of Adamena. In the walk you pass through olive groves. At Stagiates, under the shade of the two big plane trees, you can quench your thirst with the cool water running from the fountain of the square, as we try to read the old inscription in Arabic letters, dating from the Ottoman era.

During your walk enjoy great views over Makrinitsa and Volos.

History and Culture

Taking the road from Volos to Portaria, visitors will find the village of Ano Volos (upper Volos), founded by The Christians from the castle of Volos, persecuted by the Turks. The inhabitants of this village took an important part in the Revolution of 1821. It is a small village with white houses built according the traditional architecture of Pelion, with huge plane trees, dark gorges, water courses and flowery sides.

Sights

In Ano Volos is the Folklore Museum of Theophilos and a wonderful neoclassical building which belonged to Chatziargyris. This building is considered as the jewel of the area by the locals There are sixty square meters of frescoes of the eccentric farmer painter Theophilos Chatzimichailis a late-nineteenth-century ‘primitive’ who went from door to door throughout Eastern Greece. He sang under the painting and asked no payment other than compensation for its material costs. He was dressed in fez, pleated skirt, tight-fitting woolen stockings and tsarouchia (Turkish slippers).

Also worth a visit is The Episkopi of Ano Volos, the church of Virgin Mary on the hill of Episkopi in a lovely setting with a wonderful view of the city and the Pegasitic Gulf. This is a historic and very important religious monument.

Special Experience

Ano Volos lies very close to Volos and to the famous villages of Portaria and Makrinitsa and all three places are easily accessible with public transport.

Volos, is a port city. It is the capital of the district, prefecture, Magnesia, Thessaly, at the foot of Pelion, or Pilio to 1651 m high. The city lies on the Pagasitic Gulf (Aegean Sea). Volos is the cradle of many mythological stories. The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1955.

The history of the city goes back to the settlement Iolcos, 2500 B.C . Later Volos capital and main port of Mycenaean Thessaly. In the 3rd century BC the importance of the town became subservient after subordinated to the Macedonian Demetrias was.

Portaria is beautiful every season, whether it is snowy or sunny, surrounded by trees and flowers with autumn leaves or blooming flowers that decorate the winding cobble-stoned paths, fresh spring waters, impressive traditional stone houses, authentic examples of local architecture, and picturesque squares. The whole village is filled with ornate stone-fountains, squares, churches and monuments.
