The vegetation of the area is rich, and the view to the Pagasitikos Gulf is marvellous.
History and Culture
The initial name of the village was Almeria, i.e. an arvanit-tuskish word that means grassland. This grassland caught the interest of the stock farmers, settled in the area in the early 19th. century, who were transporting goods with their mules and horses from Pelion and its villages to Thessaly and Epirus, from where they were also bringing several goods back home.
At the beautiful central square is located the oldest monument, i.e. the church of Agios Athanasios (18th. century). Of particular interest are also the murals of the folk painter Theofilos which survive in the village’s bakery.
Full of trees, with picturesque localities and centres of recreation. Walk through the cobbled streets and discover hidden places, taste delicious mezedes in the taverns and grill houses located there, enjoy your time, and at the same time find relaxation and rest.
It is traversed by the fabulous river Anavro, which constitutes natural lung, since its watercourse is full of very tall plane trees .
At the upper quarter is raised proud the neo-classical building “Hatziargiri”, full of charm.
Below there is the preserved building “Fournos Velentza” with beautiful murals of the known, popular painter Theophilos.
In the center of the village there is a big square paved with flagstones, with its old plane tree in the middle, constitutes a natural balcony, from where you can enjoy the city of Volos and the sober Pagasitikos.
The Hill of Goritsa is a small natural hill and lies in the southeast of Ali Meria. The hill is known as the promenade and the Church of the Life Giving Fountain, at the top. The present church took the place of an older Christian church 18th century, and there is evidence for the existence in the same ancient sacred.
The hill was inhabited in the mid-4th century AD. A big fortified city was built there. However, the city wall, as survives today, should be completed during the reign of Cassandra (between 316 and 298 AD). Outside the city walls are both big cemeteries, the western and eastern. Near the eastern gate, outside the firewall, is a small natural cave. Within its walls is the inscription “Dios Meilichiog”, which leads to the conclusion that the region worshiped Zeus. The quarries of 4th century BC. preserved in 30 points of the hill.
You can follow the historical old mule track which connected Volos to the villages of East Pelion (Zagora, Makrirachi, Kissos etc.).
