Description of Meteora and the monasteries
The name Meteora means “suspended in the air.” Meteora consists of a number of massive, grey colored rock pinnacles that rise towards the sky. Once these vertical rocks were topped with a total of 24 monasteries. Six of the monasteries are still standing today. Rising high above the Thessalian plain, the sandstone megaliths on which the monasteries were built average 300 metres in height, with several reaching 550 metres. The rock masses were formed some 60 million years ago, their distinctive and varied shapes sculpted over time by earthquakes, rain, and wind.
The Meteora monasteries have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and the Meteora-Antichassia region has been officially declared a Natura 2000 Ecological Zone by the Greek Ministry of Environment, for the protection of its rare species of birds and flowers.
Meteora is about 143 km. from Volos and about 230 km from Thessaloniki.
