“Anetopoulos” Ceramic and Pottery Museum was created by the family of Vasilis Anetopoulos, which around 1790 held a pottery workshop in Apeiranthos, Naxos.
You can see potter molds, pieces from the family workshop, and some folk pottery from all over Greece, which Vangelis Anetopoulos, grandson of Vasilis Anetopoulos, managed to collect.

Quite an experience, is the ceramic pottery museum of the Anetopoulos. Any ceramicist knows that once the kiln door closes anything can happen… it is the magical part of this ancient art form. For many, firing is a final act; a celebratory moment fringed by anxiety and excitement. It can be communal by bringing together artists to fire their work together. Some say the fire itself can be brutal yet beautiful. It is the fire that gives these works of art their final form; thereby rendering them informed by fire.

The ceramic museum

It has three halls with exhibits. Among them, family casts give you the chance to admire some folk pottery from all over Greece. The family practices the old Greek ancient pottery tradition. Greek pottery is important for the intrinsic beauty forms and decoration as for the light it sheds on the development of Greek illustrative art.

See pottery molds, items from the family workshop, learn interesting facts about pottery, how people worked, continuing to serve the pottery field. Admire the beautiful ceramic items used in everyday life in rural areas and in cities also ceramics made during international workshops and exhibitions.

The museum participates in various activities. It organises workshops, educational programs, ceramic exhibitions, international academic conferences. The museum host important periodical exhibitions.

The first exhibition, in 2001, got the name “Greek contemporary ceramists”. Since then, the museum organises fairs every year with artists from all over the world. In the museum you can admire ceramic works by world famous artists such as Khaled Ben Slimane and Michael Osborne.

The protector angel

For lovers of pottery making, the museum organises workshops, tours. The backyard features 700 year old olive trees. Besides lessons take  place in the backyard in, an open-air amphitheater, weather permitting.

Access to the museum is free. You can look around in the shop with all kinds of beautiful ceramic works of art, and who knows there is something to take with you as a souvenir!
