Pelion Peninsula, within the region of Magnesia perfecture, is known for its beautiful mountains, but not only! Some rate it as Greece’s most beautiful region and it certainly has some striking contrasts. The eastern edge of those cliffs dip dramatically into the Aegean Sea while the western side curls around the Pagasitic Bay.
Off of Pelion of super curvy roads are Pelion’s fantastic villages. The most scenic of them, stone buildings made out of expertly carved local grey, blue, or green slate and red clay. They are built on terraces on the slopes and offer stunning vistas of the surrounding slopes and the sea.
Pelion, a place for all seasons
Pelion remains beautiful all year round and is suitable for all kinds of activity moments and ecotourism while providing the necessary infrastructure to accommodate tourists. The coastline hides some excellent beaches, often of a coarse sand/fine shingle which makes for excellent swimming in clear water.
For foreign tourism is Pelion still fairly unknown, and the small seaside villages – quiet for most of the year, busy over weekends. Greeks travel regularly to Pelion for a summer break, a fall getaway, a cozy winter holiday or for springtime trips especially around Greek Easter. But this is an exciting place for all seasons. In short, nature blooms all four seasons here.
While I was in Pelion, at the end of January, I experienced the region brightened by the winter sun as well as misty with fog and in some parts, under a blanket of snow. I’d say winter in Pelion is charming, without thick summer crowds. Quiet and scenic.
No matter what time of the year, the very winding roads make for slow driving. Still, it was worth it and I’d go back in a heartbeat.
I’d say it’s difficult to drive around in just one day to visit the top sights and appreciate the peninsula’s beauty. It’s best to take your time. Definitely split your time between the west side and the east side.
